Atlantic Rest Natural Burial

Christmas Wreath Amnesty

At Penlow we have always operated a wreath amnesty at Christmas time.  This could also be a hand-tied sheath.

However, there are strict rules with this.  Please do not bring wreaths that contain anything that is on the naughty list.

Naughty list:

Oasis - commonly known as floral foam.

Glitter - this might look pretty but as the petals and leaves die off - they come away from the stem and blow all around the site.

Plastic - this goes without saying and ties in with the floral foam as most foams are placed in trays.

Ribbon & glue.

Nice list:

Willow or straw bases covered with moss to retain moisture for the greenery and flowers.

Dried fruits or berries as an offering for the wildlife.  Even pine cones and cinnamon sticks.  Foraged feathers can be nice in a wreath.

Natural jute twine can be used to tie everything together.

You are welcome to make a trip to Penlow first if you would like to forage in the woods for your wreath.

It is entirely possible to make a wreath yourself starting from scratch.  Several florists in the Bude area regulary host eco-wreath making courses in the run up to the festive season.

If you intend to collect and re-use your wreath each year - I am happy for it to contain wire in the base of it, to hold the shape.  If wreaths aren't fully compostible - it can take hours to take them apart and compost the components individually.

I hope that for 2026 we will run a wreath making course on site in the gazebo.  Keep your eyes peeled for details of that if it comes to fruition next year.

There are bamboo pegs by the office door - you can use these to fix your wreath in place.

All wreaths will be removed by Monday 5th January 2026.  If you are collecting your wreath - please do so by then or let me know so that I can leave it by the office for collection.

Thank  you for your co-operation in our wreath amnesty scheme.
